ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

thule records camp is hitting it hard these days. this time its a collaboration between two pioneers within the icelandic techno scene. on the a-side, we have static, a hypnotic groove with indistinguishable voices and shimmering dub chords, and Útkall, minimalistic dub techno mantra. on the flipside we have the heavily-rhythmic sedna, where the drums and bass compliment each other in such a way that it might cause involuntary muscle movements, and at last timelaps, a delicate minimalistic voyage. ohm is best known for his releases on force inc with exos. octal industries, a veteran who has already gained a respectable reputation within the idm community under his ruxpin pseudonym, returns to his origins with this collaboration. thule records is considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of iceland‘s most renowned electronic musicians.

the fourth laq is proudly made by attic’s owner fabrizio lapiana. his melodic techno taste is employed into each track moving from hypnotic hard strings of the “cold in summer” to the sour and acidic groove of “acid smiles” (both on the first side). in the b-side fabrizio goes into more hypnotic and obsessive sound. a sort of progressive-techno vibes served to people who never-stop dancing.

the europe-centered techno scene might be thinking: where is techno in a city as vast, dynamic and electric as new york? it’s alive and well, and keeps growing through aptly-named new york trax. founded in 2016 and based in brooklyn, new york trax is an outlet for new york music, by new york artists, in new york city. new york trax 02 was written by boris brenecki (ontal, impulse controls), who has recently relocated to new york, starting a new chapter in his life and artistic career. this record is the very first material he produced in new york, heavily inspired by the city and its people. ‘the oven’, with its continuous filthy groove intensified by metallic percussions, is a serious candidate for an instant classic and a deadly weapon when used on a dancefloor. the grittiness of “the oven” was depicted through images of the less beaten paths of new york in a well-received official video published recently by the label. dark yet insanely dynamic “transit system”, based on field recordings of the new york city subway, opens with a bang the b side of the record, followed by “strictly hardcore”, a sonic manifesto of brutality. get it while it’s hot!

motion (newcastle) co-founder and resident richie steedman makes his debut on jamie jones’ hottrax imprint with three groove-centered productions this november. a key component in the north of england’s electronic music scene, steedman has had a deep-rooted passion for house and techno since becoming au fait with a pair of turntables at merely 12 years old. since then the british dj launched newcastle’s motion event series back in 2010, where he’s a resident alongside fellow hottrax producer patrick topping. he now joins a roster spanning the likes of yousef, harry romero, waff, mat.joe and more. echoing chopped vocals, crunchy percussion and a meandering bassline form the basis of ‘stitcher’ before undulating drums join a medley of squelches, pops and whirrs in ‘chance it’. concluding the package, ‘slip’ incorporates infectious open hi-hats and a stuttering vox for a moody and mesmerising finale.

tokyo’s yoshinori hayashi makes his debut on lovers rock with “asylum,” an ep of deliciously bent avant-house and free jazz-esque voyages. hayashi has been making a name for himself as a formidable studio talent, and on “asylum” he offers some of his finest work to date. “agent dissolving device” welds louche narration, kaleidoscopic atmospheres and an energized girl-group hook to an earworm groove. an invaluable tool for adventurous djs, “so wrong it’s right” doesn’t begin to describe it. meanwhile, the b-side is given over to hayashi’s more sombre, quasi-chamber music leanings. “burrow” and “the old man” both use wheezing, wandering piano figures to articulate a mournful, bleary-eyed beauty that seems to flicker in the shadows of the a-side’s extroversion.
